Mildred H. Loux, of Ephrata PA, passed away peacefully at Fairmount Homes on August 9, her 93rd birthday. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Ralph K. Loux.
Born in Quakertown PA, Millie was the daughter of Ralph and Grace (Landis) Herstine. She attended the one-room schoolhouse on Thatcher Road, enjoyed making paper dolls and drawing, learned to play the piano, and found a second home across the street at Flatland Church. Millie formed a trio with sisters Jane and Anna to sing in many local churches.
After they were married, Millie and Ralph were both very active at Flatland, where Millie served as church organist in addition to many other capacities. They lived in Quakertown for 47 years. Millie was especially at home in the kitchen, cooking innumerable delicious meals for family and friends. She loved working outdoors in the yard and garden, and watching birds and wildlife. Millie and Ralph moved to the Fairmount community in 2005. The beautiful view of Lancaster County farmland from their apartment balcony was a daily gift.
For the past six years, Millie was a much-loved resident of Farm Crest personal care at Fairmount, taking pleasure in the company of staff and other residents, church services, bingo, going for walks, exercise class, eating meals with the ladies at her table, tending her houseplants, reading the Bible and hymn books, and playing Rummikub with her daughter. Millie was well-known for her friendly smile, and she remembered everyone's name. Considering her lifelong love of animals, weekly visits by the community dog were a special treat.
Millie dearly loved her family. She was predeceased by sisters Anna Smith and Ruth Ruch. She is survived by siblings Jane Friesen (Jake) of Hesston KS, Ralph Herstine (Janice) of Milford Square PA, Grace Herstine (Philip Covelli) of Honey Brook PA, and Thomas Herstine (Debby) of Center Valley PA; daughter Brenda Loux of Phoenixville PA; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Sat. August 29 at Flatland Church, 180 W. Thatcher Rd., Quakertown PA. A calling will precede the service from 10:00-11:00 AM. A private interment was held in Flatland Mennonite Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to Fairmount Homes, 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata, PA 17522 (memo line: Sharing Fund).
