William “Bill” Joseph Carter, 81, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2025, leaving behind a life rich in family, service, and community.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Marcella; sons Christopher (Marta), Dennis (Amy), and Vincent; and six grandchildren: Catherine, Emma, Owen, Ryan, Jane, and Nolan. He was the son of Edward and Regina and grew up in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. Bill was the middle of three boys—brother to Edward (Kathleen) and the late Eugene (Michaela). He also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews in the Carter and Keenan families.
A proud 1961 graduate of Northeast Catholic High School and U.S. Army veteran, Bill spent over 30 years as a Philadelphia firefighter. Enterprising and handy (and never one to sit still), he simultaneously worked several other jobs in various trades. Even in “retirement,” he enjoyed several years of employment at Wehrung’s Home Center in Ottsville.
Bill and Marcella started their family in Olney (St. Helena Parish), raised their family in Fox Chase (St. Cecilia Parish), and settled in Center Valley (St. Joseph Parish in Coopersburg). He dedicated countless hours to youth sports, coaching and volunteering with organizations like Cheltenham Jayvees, Fox Chase Soccer, Fox-Rok Baseball, Cardinal Dougherty High School, and Kennedy-Kenrick High School. He was a fixture on the sidelines, in the stands, and even live-streaming.
Always loving the outdoors, Bill cherished his time at the shore and in the mountains. He was a diehard Philadelphia sports fan. Premier League Soccer became a staple of his weekend mornings. He entertained his immediate and extended family and friends with a memorable rendition of Santa Claus during the holidays. Among his numerous other pastimes, Bill was talented in wood working and the art of stained glass.
Bill “U.B.” was a friend of Bill W. for 34 years. He was sustained by, and supported many, on their road to recovery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Danny’s Ride at dannysride.org.
The family is grateful to the many relatives, friends, neighbors and caregivers who were devoted to Bill.
